It makes a colorful hedge and flowers until frost with bright orange-red hips that persist far into winter. This rose has its own root. The Prairie Rose, Rosa setigera, is characterized by its long, arching branches which grow 5 to 8 feet long and bend over to the ground. The pink flowers in July precede the small, red persistent rose hips. The flowers have a mild fragrance and no repeat bloom. Shiny, dark green foliage turns variable but attractive shades of deep red, purple in late autumn. Prairie Rose is great for naturalizing, split rail fences, or embankments. The distinguishing features of Prairie Rose are the number of leaflets (9 or 11, most others are 7 or less) and the irregular thorns on the stem. It is best grown in average, medium to wet, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Best flowering and disease resistance generally occur in full sun, however. Water deeply and regularly (mornings are best). Avoid overhead watering.

Austrian Copper Rose, Rosa foetida bicolor, covers itself in small brightly colored blooms in the spring before many other roses have started blooming. The single blooms are bright coppery orange inside and gold outside. The foliage is pretty, with 5 to 7 leaflets per leaf. It is a vigorous grower and very winter hardy, and it only taking a couple of years to get 6 or 7 feet high. Austrian Copper Rose has sparse foliage; tolerates poor soil; dislikes being pruned. Suckers cheerfully, if allowed, making it useful for nearly impenetrable hedging. It is the most grown 'species' rose in the world. It is found in home gardens everywhere in the U.S.

The Henry Kelsey rose has a trailing and spreading growth habit which is the highlight of this winter hardy rose. The blooms are a medium red color and come in clusters of 9 to 13. Henry Kelsey roses have a nice spicy fragrance, which makes this a wonderful addition in a Northern garden. The red flowers bloom in early summer and repeat in late summer.
