Growing tomatoes
Get better tomatoes
Tomatoes generally thrive in a warm greenhouse when adequately looked after, but there are also a few tricks of the trade to help produce an even better crop.
When growing tomatoes regular removal of side shoots is important, to prevent plants becoming an impenetrable mass of leaves and it also makes the tomato plant more productive.
This task often worries the less experienced tomato grower but it is simple.Grasp the shoot that appears between the main stem and the leaf with your finger and thumb and bend it sharply downwards. This should give a clean break.
Tomatoes grow best in the greenhouse border which provides them with a good volume of soil. This makes watering easier too, because they need watering less often than tomato plants grown in containers or grow bags.
Even in well a manured border it is best to provide a supplementary feeding tomatoes thrive on it.Potash in particular will help to keep the plants cropping well, and liquid fertillisers specially formulated for tomatoes prove invaluable. The rate and frequency at which these need to be applied varies so check the label carefully.
